3D printed bone implants could eliminate need for amputations

Patients could be saved from having their limbs amputated by replacing damaged bones with antibiotic coated 3D printed implants.

Researchers at Queensland University of Technology’s Centre in Regenerative Medicine are advancing this new technology by tailoring it to the specific needs of each patient.

They have improved how cells stick to the implant, which improves the growth of new bone.

“By coating the implants with antibiotics, we can also prevent infection where the implants are inserted,” says Tara Shabab. “This reduces complications and bring this technology one step closer to doctors’ surgeries.”

The fresh science training was a hands on program. I truly enjoyed the training with actual journalists and stake holders.

I had been struggling for a while with how to explain my research to the general public and the fresh science training really helped me to come up with different angles for different audiences.

I truly enjoyed the pub test because I had the opportunity to talk about the importance of geology  to the general public.
