Fresh Science NSW 2021

Monday 8 & Tuesday 9 November, Thursday 11 & Friday 12 November, & Monday 15 November training days. Pub night at the earliest date pending COVID-19 restrictions.

Fresh Science NSW was held on 6 November 2019 in Sydney.

Ten Fresh Scientists took to the stage and explained their work in the time it takes a birthday sparkler to burn out.

We heard how Aspirin can be used to treat the world’s deadliest infection; using maths to predict illegal logging and poaching; new ways to see pain in your brain.

From electric vehicles to sneaky bacteria; people came along and enjoyed dinner, a drink and caught some of the latest science with researchers from UNSW, Macquarie, UTS, USyd, WSU, CSIRO and the Centenary Institute.

The NSW Fresh Scientists undertook media and communication training at Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney on 5 & 6 November.

Fresh Science is a national competition and training program helping early-career researchers find and share their stories of discovery.

We take young researchers with no media experience and help them become media spokespeople for their science, and reach stakeholders in government and industry.

Fresh Science gives finalists a taste of life in the limelight, with a day of media training, a day of training in stakeholder engagement, and a public event in their home state.

Alumni of the program include Professor Allan Duffy and Dr Niraj Lal.

The fresh science training was a hands on program. I truly enjoyed the training with actual journalists and stake holders.

I had been struggling for a while with how to explain my research to the general public and the fresh science training really helped me to come up with different angles for different audiences.

I truly enjoyed the pub test because I had the opportunity to talk about the importance of geology  to the general public.
